INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL AWARD COLLABORATIVE ACTIVITY...

THE RUSHEY MEAD HIGH SCHOOL, LEICESTER, U.K.

   “FLOWERS BRING SMILES”
CLASSES IX AND X

Botanical gardens, in the modern sense, developed from Physic Garden whose main purpose was to cultivate herbs for medical use as well as research and experimentation. Such gardens have a long history. In Europe, for example, Aristotle (384 BCE – 322 BCE), the “Father of Biology” is said to have had a physic garden in the Lyceum at Athens, which was used for educational purposes and for the study of botany, and this was inherited, or possibly set up, by his pupil Theophrastus, the "Father of Botany"
Botanical gardens are still being built, such as the first botanical garden in Oman, which will be one of the largest gardens in the world. Once completed, it will house the first large-scale cloud forest in a huge glasshouse.

In India we have several Botanical Gardens, in which many medicinal plants are conserved. Our school G. D. Goenka, Greater Noida had organized a field excursion of Botanical Garden in Noida, for our students of classes IX and X, to get hands on knowledge about flowers of summer season and  valuable medicinal plants.

Our students are participating in The International School Award under the aegis of British Council. The collaborative activity “ Flowers Bring smiles” is being conducted by students of classes IX and X.

Our students visited the Noida Botanical Garden on 7 August 2018 and
saw beautiful flowers native to the local region, like Blue Lotus, Champa, Mogra, Amaltas, Desi Babool. They also saw some rare plant species like the Kalp Vrishk, Rudraksh, Rati, Giloy, Chandan (Vulnerable Species in IUCN Red List) Tulsi (Antibacterial and also used in toothache and earache and abdominal pain and many more.

The resource person also explained about the benefits of innumerable medicinal plants which are the flora of our country and are used world wide for cure and prevention of many life threatening diseases.

Botanical Gardens are the Taxonomic Tools/Aids to facilitate identification, naming and classification of  the species. These studies are carried out from actual specimens, which are collected from the field and preserved as referrals in the form of Herbaria.

Students of Classes IX and X noted down the Botanical names of flowers plants, medicinal plants and their importance in Ayurvedic Medicines.
